art badland - tow last suppers with spokes-mascots

this is funny, I googled "Mediocrity borrows, genius steals" and found someone said it was in a Nike ad. Ha!

What was it Picasso said? Something very similar. I guess he understood. wink

I spotted this at Metafilter - The strange synchronicity of the last breakfast - just so y*all know it doesn*t just happen in advertising, but also in art. wink

Aubrey Hallis painted a last breakfast with advertising spokesmascots at the table (and Aunt Jemima as Jesus) in 1996, and a little later Dick Detzner had the same idea and made a very similar painting of the last supper....

Thomas Sterns Eliott wrote, "Mediocrity borrows, genius steals..." John Berger, the famed British art critic, wrote an entire book devoted to semiotics and iconography in advertising,( Ways of seeing) citing the history of art as ad*s major influence. It makes sense to draw allusions both iconographically and culturally. Advertising is steeped in its own time. It CAN*T be pulled from its own social mode.
