What do you think of "Openad"?

Is "openad" just like one giant competition, or god forbid, an always running pitch? It's been around for a few years now, has anyone here signed up to check it out? It sounds fishy to me, am I the only one who thinks that?

Honestly? Can you ask more questions? :P

I have no idea what to think about it. I've never logged in, but I keep seeing their google-textads practically everywhere. It seems to be a giant pitch like you say, where "it's free for creatives to join" but then again, you not get anything after you've pushed all your great work in there anyway.

Wouldn't touch it with a ten foot pole.

Hi, guys - I'm pleased to see the interest in OpenAd! We are currently in the process of launching our product and service offering in the US after successfully launching in other markets around the world. I'm jumping in here to try and clear up any confusion and to extend an invitation to everyone to get involved!

If you're a creative, why not join our global private network of more than 10,000+ creative professionals and have the chance to pitch clients that turn to OpenAd for ideas? We receive hundreds of requests from clients all over the world needing ideas for 1) Broadcast and print advertising; 2) Copy, taglines and positioning; 3) Concepts for digial, viral and DM; 4) PR, event and stunt concepts; 5) Design, branding and identity; and 6) Creative use of media. Recent pitches were run by clients like Mercedes-Benz, MTV, Gillette and Bono's One Campaign. And some have big money to spend on an idea!

When you work with OpenAd, your ideas are 100% copyright protected and legally secure. We also have a creative team that will work with you on your pitch. Best of all, our services are free to you! For each pitch an award is given to the winner whether or not the idea is licensed. The normal amount awarded is $1,500 so this can be a great way to make some extra cash in your free time. Also, any of your unlicensed ideas can be posted in our gallery and made searchable to clients worldwide - and you set the price for the license fee.

For marketers and advertisers, OpenAd provides a great source for creative ideas. We guarantee a minimum of 20 - 100 ideas per brief posted with us and they can be presented in an online gallery in a matter of days - all fully cleared and priced according to the client's budget.

Also, OpenAd should not be seen as a threat to agencies. In fact, right now we're working with some of the biggest on some pretty impressive projects. Agencies often use OpenAd to outsource creative for their clients just as they work with freelancers, but the advantage with OpenAd is getting a global perspective on a brand since ideas come in from every part of the world. OpenAd does not execute on ideas which is 90% of the work agencies do for clients so it's a win-win for everyone.

There is more information on the site so check it out and feel free to let me know if you have any further questions.

Well that clears some things up. So

a) you answer an actual brief!
b) everyone who does actually gets kickback for their efforts (1500 USD)

Two things I thought the opposite - I thought one uploaded random ideas and got nil if nobody bought it. Wrong!

I'm going to have to log and read about the copyright protection though - ideas can't be copyrighted can they? How do you do that?

Hmm. Gillian Wearing, Bob Dylan, Maxell and Volkswagen spring to mind.

Didn't INXS do that sign thing at some point too? Hasn't everyone done it by now?

Bob Dylan did it with Subterranean Homesick Blues , back in 1965.
If you don't know it by name, you know the first few lines:
"Johnny's in the basement
Mixing up the medicine
I'm on the pavement
Thinking about the government
The man in the trench coat
Badge out, laid off
Says he's got a bad cough
Wants to get it paid off..."

And "Weird Al" Yankovic did his version

I wonder how "your ideas are 100% copyright protected and legally secure" at openad. I'm a little lost on their site to find the information on this, and as far as I know ideas can not be protected only executions. Can anyone point me to the right direction/clarify this?

adlib's picture

Some needs to explain that "ideas vs executions" thing to me in small words. I can't copyright an idea?
