Mascot help

We're just discussing old UK mascot-type characters, and two of us remember having owned a little figure wearing white overalls whose head was like a flame shape. We think he might have been a mascot for STP oil or something similar. Anyone got an ideas, or better still, pictures?

Sounds like a Smurf! :D

I say that as I collected almost all of them and recently discovered them in my father's loft space. Some haven't made it through, but many have (plus the house).

I can't think of any other mascot other than football/sport ones. Not knowing how old you are - you don't need to tell me - it's not easy to pin down dates when these mascots might have been available. Any help on the era?

It's not a Smurf, and we're probably talking 1970s sometime.

Ok, that's just bizarre. I've recently unearthed my 50-odd smurfs, smurfelina and smurfhouse in it's original dented box as well.

As for the overall wearing dudes with white-flame shaped head - I remember those too! What on earth were they for?

Thanks Alex, that would have surely driven me nuts otherwise as I remember it too. :)

Now I recall why Esso was cool when I was a kid. Esso, 76 (for the ball signs) and BP - in that order were the cool places for gas. Sorry, petroleum .

I'm glad I found him. We're a couple of hours behind schedule because of that little rascal!

Me too, as I was trawling a lot of mascot sites. Then, when you said the 70s I thought of more oil companies (they seemed to always be giving out something back then, other than huge profits!) so did a search on Google images and found this on Flickr: http://farm1.static.flickr.com/76/163598534_7025a24a0a.jpg?v=0

Excellent. Still don't know if the little fella had a name though.

Okay, now I know what he looks like I've found several instances on eBay and alike of this little chap. They all refer to him as Esso Boy.

Just search Esso Boy in Google and see what comes up :)
